THE STORY OF BARBORA RADVILAITE

Barbora Radvilaitė is a popular historical personality in Lithuania. Barbora lived in 16th century and is best known for her love to King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania Žygimantas Augustas. Withdrawn into her own intimate world of private emotions and with no political aspirations she still managed to create turmoil in the society of her day. She became a Queen and after her mysterious death left a deep trace in history.

EXTRACT FROM SYNOPSIS

A gathering in the square near the Palace of Lords. Polish and Italian noblemen and members of the Radvila family are here to greet the royal family. King Žygimantas the Old arrives together with his wife Bona Sforza, their son Žygimantas Augustas and his wife Elisabeth von Habsburg are also there. Everyone is invited to a regale at the palace.

Žygimantas Augustas is not interested in receptions and matters of state. Paying no attention to his young wife, he is merrily enjoying the company of other women. Elisabeth is constantly humiliated by her husband in front of everyone, and Queen Bona is not pleased of her son’s behavior.

The ball at the Palace of Lords is in full swing. The nobility are glorifying the royal family and struggling for power. Žygimantas Augustas disregards the intrigues of the court. He is thrilled: Barbora Radvilaitė is here and he has already heard about her beauty some time ago. The Radvilas notice that Žygimantas is interested in Barbora, whose husband Stanislovas Goštautas recently died. To continue the celebration, all the participants in the ball are invited to a hunt. Žygimantas Augustas can think only about Barbora.
